Task 7: Applying what you have learned to writing a formal email
Subject: Self-introduction
Dear Professor Blackstone,
I am writing to introduce myself as a student in your communication module,
group S12. My name is Muhammad Fatris Bin Malek, and I graduated from Nanyang
Polytechnic with a diploma in electronic systems in 2022. After completing my
national service with the Airport Police Division under the Singapore Police
Force in August 2024, I decided to pursue civil engineering at the Singapore
Institute of Technology. Fascinated by how infrastructures such as dams and
bridges withstand immense loads, I was inspired to switch careers and explore
this field.
In my professional experiences, I’ve developed strong
communication skills, particularly in team settings. During my internship at JM
VisTec System as an application engineer, I facilitated weekly meetings with
the sales and software departments to exchange updates. These meetings ensured everyone stayed updated on changes and aligned with the project timeline. By maintaining open and clear communication, I helped prevent
delays and misunderstandings regarding the client’s needs. However, at times I
find it challenging to articulate myself clearly during meetings due to
nervousness. In one meeting, I stuttered and struggled to answer questions
clearly when they were directed at me. I’ve started practicing responses before
meetings but still find it challenging under pressure.
To address these challenges, I have set two goals for this
module. First, I want to develop a concise way of thinking so I’m able to
effectively convey my points clearly. Second, I hope to improve my presentation
skills to deliver engaging presentations in small or large audiences. I believe
these goals will help me step out of my comfort zone and effectively
communicate with clients and stakeholders in the future.
What makes me unique is my willingness to go above and
beyond for people in need, whether they are strangers or friends. I believe
that humanity is often treated as transactional, and I strive to foster a more
compassionate approach in my interactions. In collaborative engineering
projects, this trait allows me to build strong, supportive relationships with
team members, ensuring that everyone feels heard and valued. I believe this
mindset fosters better teamwork and leads to more effective problem-solving.
Thank you for your time and guidance. I look forward to
learning from your expertise and applying the skills gained to grow into a
confident and effective communicator, both academically and professionally.
Yours
Sincerely,
Muhammad
Fatris Bin Malek

Hi Fatris,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your introduction in such a detailed manner, it’s my pleasure to get to know you. Despite coming from a different course, your decision to study civil engineering because of your interest in infrastructures is well-explained. Like you, I chose this course to explore this field because of interest. Your strength in communication skills is well-illustrated by your internship experience, having had facilitated meetings demonstrates your leadership abilities. Additionally, I can fully relate to the nervousness you feel when presenting especially under pressure. Your goals are also clearly stated.
I admire the way you are willing to help others whether they are just strangers and your mindset where in group projects you help others feel heard and valued. It is a rare trait to possess. I also believe that it would make a big difference be it in this industry or other such as having better team rapport and effective problem-solving.
Overall, your letter is well-written and organised with the use of tenses consistent. The way you write your letter is very sincere and it is a joy to read. I look forward to seeing your progress throughout this module.
Best regards,
Sandra

Dear Fatris,
ReplyDeleteThank you for this clear, comprehensive and detailed letter, which addresses all the points of the brief in a robust manner. You state, for example, that "how infrastructures such as dams and bridges withstand immense loads" motivated you to switch from electrical to civil. If there were room in the letter to add details, I'd like to know how that interest came about.
I especially enjoyed learning about how your professional comm skills have evolved. Your internship at JM VisTec System as an application engineer is well covered with you connecting your work to your skills needs and development. I'm impressed by how you reflect honestly on
a few areas of weakness. It's also heartening to read that you "strive to foster a more compassionate approach in my interactions...." Kudos to you for this truly admirable mindset.
Language wise, this is a really fluent effort.
I look forward to working with you further this term.
Best wishes,
Brad
